Oakland Child Support Lawyer
Protecting Children Following the End of Your Relationship
In many divorce cases, child support is a highly contested issue. Child support is also a major factor at the end of any nonmarital relationship where kids are involved. Child support is very important because it has a great impact on the quality of life your children will have going forward, and it affects your personal financial situation as well.
My name is Shelley A. Gordon, and at my Oakland law firm I help couples resolve child support, child custody and all other California family law issues. My firm has focused on family law for more than 23 years, and I have seen how the emotional and financial concerns in child custody disputes can combine to cause great pain. It is my goal to make sure that your children have the resources they need following the end of your relationship. I believe that once you realize that child support is truly for your kids and not for your ex, the process will be less painful and less acrimonious.
Understanding Child Support in California
Child support in our state is determined by a complex set of support guidelines that judges must use. The law requires judges to look at many different factors, including:
- Each parent’s gross income, which includes salary, commissions, potential income, pension benefits and more
- The educational and medical needs of the child
- What the child’s standard of living would be if both parents were living together
- Each parent’s debts
- What the child custody arrangements are
What if You Are Self-Employed?
Self-employed people generally do not have the typical “pay stubs” that most other workers get, so it can be quite complicated to show the court what your income really is or to understand the income of the other self-employed party. I am highly experienced in analyzing financial documents and records to give judges a fair and accurate view of the financial situation.
How Does Paternity Factor In?
At my firm, I represent fathers and mothers who wish to establish paternity in order to obtain child support and fathers who wish to assert parental rights or challenge paternity. If a father has not signed a Declaration of Paternity when the child is born, he may need to get court orders to obtain and enforce his parental rights.
Focused on the Children
In child support cases, it is important that you and your lawyer do not lose sight of the fact that your child’s best interests are the driving factor in child support determinations. My goal as your attorney will be to ensure, to the best of my ability, that I present the judge with a fair and complete picture of your family so that an appropriate support award can be made.
